What Are People Saying About the Faire?

Here, a Faire-goer shares with us some of her experiences at the Holiday Faire, and what keeps her coming back.

I come to the Faire because my grandson attends the school. Last year was my first time and I brought my granddaughter with me.

The reason that I look forward to it is because of the activities for the children. What stood out for me was the man with the drums and his enthusiasm for instructing the children on how to keep a beat.

I also liked the candle making, the dancing ladies, the room with the books for sale, the lady with the big pockets with treats for the children, the woman who taught the kids how to do weaving and the “craft room.”

The background performances of older kids playing musical instruments in some of the corners of the building made for peacefulness and a non-rushed event. I found it to be a lovely, peaceful day with unique crafts, unrushed projects, and smiling, kind, and polite faces all around.

Author Vint Virga Appearing at the Holiday Faire

Veterinary behaviorist, Dr. Vint Virga, author of The Soul of All Living Creatures, What Animals Can Teach Us About Being Human, is coming to the Meadowbrook Waldorf School Holiday Faire for an intimate reading and book signing.  This event is part of the wonderful offerings presented at Adult Night on November 23rd and will start promptly at 7:00 PM. A limited number of books will be for sale at the reading.

Author Vint VirgaSpace is limited. To reserve your spot, please email a request to

Dr. Vint Virga shares some of his thoughts with readers here:

MWS: How has the experience of writing your book influenced your own relationships?

Dr. Vint Virga: The world of stepping into the shoes of a writer has been a sea of change in my personal life as much as it has been in my work. While writing the final drafts of the book, I spent two winters apart from family and friends in literary fellowships at The MacDowell Colony. Living in solitude for most of each day in a studio set in the woods of New Hampshire allowed me to reflect on my writing and life in a way in which few artists can in the world as we know it. Needless to say as I worked on each chapter, I found I was writing them as much for me as for my readers.  Each chapter and lesson has taken my relationships with animals and people to a much deeper level.
MWS: In this season of giving, some parents may decide to surprise their children with a pet. What recommendations would you make to prospective animal owners before taking this step?
Dr. Vint Virga: While surprising a child or loved one with a new pet for the holidays can certainly be romantic and exciting, it also can be fraught with struggles and unexpected problems.  Animals (just as much as people) have individual personalities–apart from species or breed characteristics. So, in giving a pet to a child or a loved one, I encourage friends to include the whole family in finding and choosing new pets to come home.  The adventure of searching for a new pet can reveal which creature is suited for them and will best bring to light the magical bond we are hoping to give to that pet and our loved one.
(From Dr. Vint Virga’s website) With The Soul of All Living Creatures, Virga draws from his decades in veterinary practice to reveal how, by striving to perceive the world as animals do, we can enrich our own appreciation of life, enhance our character, nurture our relationships, improve our communication with others, reorder our values, and deepen our grasp of spirituality. Virga discerningly illuminates basic traits shared by both humans and animals and makes animal behavior meaningful, relevant, and easy to understand. Insightful and eloquent, The Soul of All Living Creatures offers an intimate journey into the lives of our fellow creatures and a thought-provoking promise of what we can learn from spending time with them.

Like Books? You’ll Love the Book Room at the Holiday Faire

Contributed by Erica LePore

“When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.”  – Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus

When budgeting your book expenses, keep in mind a 2010 study published in the journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility that found a direct correlation between a child’s academic success and the number of books in the home.  The study found that children who grew up in a home with more than 500 books spent an average of three more years in school than children whose parents had only a few books.  This month you can buy food and clothes with what’s left of the book budget!

Meadowbrook Waldorf School offers several chances for you to stock up on (mostly) used books at great prices, so if book sales make your heart skip a beat, come to one or all of these events!

The first are at the Annual Used Book Pre-Sale taking place at Earth Care Farm, 89 Country Drive, Charlestown on Wednesday, November 13th from 9AM-3PM and from 6:30-9:00PM.  Admission for the daytime event is $5 and includes coffee and tea.  Admission for the evening event is $10 and includes appetizers, desserts, and wine.  It’s a place to find the best selection of this year’s Faire books at very reasonable prices.

Your next opportunities to peruse the used book room are at the Holiday Faire itself, held at Meadowbrook Waldorf School, 300 Kingstown Rd., West Kingston on Saturday, November 23rd from 6-9PM and Sunday, November 24th from 10AM to 4PM.

The books range from used Waldorf books to used books of all genres and for all ages.  New this year will be a table highlighting books by local authors, including Dr. Vint Virga’s, The Soul of All Living Creatures, What Animals Can Teach Us About Being Human and Patricia Mitchell’s, A Girl from the Hill: My Mother’s Journey from Italian Girl to American Woman. A limited number of signed copies of these select, new books will be for sale.

All used adult books are 3 for $10 and all used children’s books are 5 for $10 at every event.

Don’t miss your chance to fill your shelves for a great price and a great cause.  All proceeds go to benefit Waldorf educational programs in Rhode Island.  All the joy stays with you.
