The Grades

Each elementary school child begins the school day with an individual greeting and a handshake from the Class Teacher, who ideally will be with the class from grades 1-8. This continuity enables a deep understanding of each student’s strengths and challenges and supports the development of a rich social dynamic in the class. The teacher is able to bring continuity to the curriculum as well, unifying the various disciplines over the years.

Students begin the day with music, verse and movement then move into 1.5 hours of morning lesson work. Each morning lesson block is an immersion in a particular academic subject such as English, history, geography, mathematics, or botany. The block, lasting 3 – 4 weeks, is shaped and enlivened by the teacher through the arts of music, poetry, drama, painting and movement. Care is taken to make wrap each lesson in beauty as grade school children respond powerfully to what is beautiful in the world. As a vital part of building cognitive capacities and memory, the children create their own Lesson books; observations, compositions, diagrams and drawings are recorded illustrating their studies.

Specialty teachers provide lessons in German, movement, strings, recorder, handwork and woodwork. For a list of the curriculum by grade please see the right.
